Adding to the woes of the harassed customer is the soaring prices of onions. As if the escalating prices of other essential commodities were not enough, the unseasonal showers last week had hit the onion crop hard leading to shortage in supply to the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Vashi.

The prices of onions have registered a hike of almost 40 to 50 per cent in this wholesale market. Onions are currently sold at Rs200 to Rs250 for 10kg depending on the quality and the area they come from. Earlier, they were sold at Rs150 to Rs180 for 10kg.
The prices of onions in the retail market are currently around Rs30 per kg.

Only around 100 trucks are bringing onions into the market every day now as compared to the usual 150 to 180 trucks. Onions are mainly brought in from Nasik, Pune and Satara districts. “As there is a shortage of supply from all the producing areas, and the prices have shot up drastically. It will take another two months for the new crop to enter the market, and the current prices are expected to stay,” said a trader.

However, the price of potatoes has seen a dip as compared to its price 15 days ago. Potatoes are currently sold at Rs150 for 10 kg instead of its earlier Rs180 for 10 kg. In the retail market, it is hovering around Rs25 per kg depending on the quality. Potatoes are mainly supplied from Uttar Pradesh.

“Every month we see some price hike, and it is blamed on something or the other. It is becoming unbearable for the common man,” a customer at Vashi said.
