Even as the ‘best-five’ case is pending in the Supreme Court (SC) and may come up for hearing in the last week of November, several ICSE schools in the city are now contemplating setting up their own junior colleges. The schools, fed up with the state government’s unpredictable admission policies, are considering options available to them to safeguard their students’ interests.

The ‘best-five’ case, last listed for hearing in the SC on October 19, could not come up for hearing as parents from ICSE schools sought more time to file an affidavit in the court. The case was to come up for hearing after four weeks; however, there is no confirmation on the date.

Several city schools are now studying the possibilities of extending their classes up to grade XII. The state, on the other hand, is already working on a standardisation formula on the lines of the percentile method introduced in 2008.

Paul Machado, principal of Campion School, Colaba, said, “The uncertainty looming over admissions of our students in state-run colleges continues every year. So, we are planning to extend classes.” Ryan Group of Schools is also planning a similar expansion for their ICSE schools.

A member of the unaided schools’ forum, said, “Most ICSE
schools are currently working on extending their schools up to Std XII. Students who wish to continue with ICSE have fewer options in the city. Therefore, they seek options outside.” She added, “Adding classes till Std XII won’t be a difficult process for ICSE schools as permission has to be sought only from the ICSE Council. After inspecting the infrastructure and other facilities available at the school, the council generally permits a school to start the junior college section.”
