The CST railway police formed two teams on Tuesday to trace the burqa-clad woman who had kidnapped a six- day-old baby at CST railway station on Friday.

Police inspector Janardan Kolekar of CST railway police station said, “One team led by a sub-inspector will visit Haji Malang dargah at Kalyan, as well as Mahim and Haji Ali dargahs where women beggars carry babies in their laps to ask for the alms from devotees.”

He added, “The other team will visit beggars rooms at Mankhurd and Bhiwandi to look for the suspected woman. This team will also keep tabs on beggar women outside famous temples like Mahalaxmi, Mumbadevi and Siddhivinayak.” Kolekar said the police are also exploring the involvement of a beggar gang.

On October 14 evening, a burqa-clad woman introducing herself as Fatima Khan, approached Reshma Sheikh, 31, at CST waiting room, where both spent the night. At 5am the next day, Sheikh handed over her baby to Fatima for care-taking and went to the bathroom to wash clothes and to have a bath.

On returning at around 5.45am, she shocked to find Fatima missing with her baby and a bag containing Rs5,000 in cash. After an hour’s search, Sheikh lodged a complaint of kidnapping and theft against Fatima Khan at CST railway police station.

DNA had earlier reported how, in spite of getting CCTV footage from the Central Railway administration, the CST railway police had made no headway in the kidnapping case.
