Officials from the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) arrested nine youngsters, including a female, for consumption and possession of narcotic drugs from Juhu on Sunday night. Two gram of cocaine and 79 gram hashish was found on them.

Of the nine held, four have been booked for possession while five others have been charged with consumption of illegal substances. One of them, identified as Shahnawaz Shaikh, 27, was arrested earlier at a rave party busted in October last, and is suspected to be a drug peddler. At that time, he was booked for consumption as the amount of drugs found on him was very small.

Another person arrested for possession is also suspected to be a drug peddler, while the remaining two were booked for possession as the amount of drugs found on them was larger than the consumption limit.

According to an ANC official, the tip-off, which came from a college student, was received on Saturday. The party was promoted through a web forum called Isratrance. The message said that a famous disc jockey named DJ Sungirl from Russia was going to play psytrance music at Vie Lounge, Juhu, on June 19, and that it was being organised by Digital Om. The event had attracted a large crowd at the pub.

Police inspector Mrityunjay Hiremath said, “‘We sent an official inside the pub with a signalling device to check if there was drug consumption and peddling going on inside. After some time, we got confirmation that a few people had consumed drugs, but not inside the pub.”

He added that, “People were consuming drugs outside, which they were buying from peddlers present nearby. We laid a trap near the beach on Juhu Tara road and other nearby areas. The nine people were arrested from a by-lane near the pub.”

The young woman arrested for consumption had returned from the USA few days ago, as she had lost her job there due to recession. She had an interview scheduled on Monday morning for a senior position in a reputed MNC in the city.

The other six come from affluent families and consist of an MBA student, an undergraduate student, a senior official from a leading corporate firm, and three businessmen. ANC officials released five on a surety bond, while the remaining four booked for possession were produced in the court which sent them to fifteen days in judicial custody.

Kartik Kumar (name changed), one of the accused arrested for consumption said, “We will now inform ANC officials if we come to know of any rave party or about people who are involved in drug peddling and consumption.”
