The body of a 7-year-old girl, who was raped and brutally murdered four days back, was found on Wednesday in the girls’ toilet of a municipal school in Bapunagar. She lived near the municipal school where her body was found. The girl, Meeta Marwadi (name changed), was a Standard 2 student of Shreeji Vidhayalaya in Bapunagar.
It was the hysterical screams of the sweeper, Jassi Vaghela, which led to the discovery of the girl’s body. The victim’s paternal uncle, Ratan Marwadi, is among the prime suspects and has been detained by the police. Investigations have revealed that the municipal school did not have a fulltime watchman. The murder has put the Bapunagar police in an embarrassing position as they are at a loss to explain why the body was not found for four days in a functioning school.
The girl was last seen on Saturday afternoon by Trikam, a gola (ice-ball) vendor. “She and her brother were offered ice-ball (gola) by a stranger and the girl went with the stranger,” Trikam told DNA. Her brother reached home after finishing his gola but the girl never returned home.
The girl’s parents, who had filed a ‘missing person’ complaint with the Bapunagar police on Sunday, alleged that the police did not act quickly. It is suspected that the girl died of the injuries inflicted on her.
“A missing person complaint was filed in Bapunagar police station but the police did not take timely action and the girl died ,” a neighbour told DNA. The police inspector of Bapunagar police station, LP Gandhe, however, said that the culprit would be apprehended soon. “The girl must have been dead for 48 to 72 hours,” a forensic experts said. “The private parts of her body were swollen which indicates that she was
raped before being killed.”
