A combative opposition chief Nawaz Sharif on Friday appealed to the Pakistani people to help him oust Yousuf Raza Gilani, saying the Prime Minister was "occupying his office illegally" following his conviction on contempt charges by the Supreme Court.

The PML-N chief said Gilani needs to be sent home and he would use all options to achieve this.

"We will use all the options, including a long march and protests, to send Gilani home. I appeal to the youth, my sisters and all segments of society to come out and support our struggle to oust Gilani," the former premier said at a news conference at his residence here this evening.

Sharif claimed that Gilani had made Pakistan the "laughing stock" of the world community by refusing to step down after his conviction yesterday.

"The whole world is laughing at us. There is no government in Pakistan after the Supreme Court's verdict," he contended.

The Supreme Court yesterday convicted Gilani of contempt for refusing to act on its orders to reopen cases of alleged money laundering against President Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland, and gave the premier a symbolic sentence of less than a minute.

Sharif claimed that even Gilani's cabinet had no legal cover after the apex court's verdict and it stood dissolved.

"Gilani's sticking to his office is tantamount to treason. Gilani is under oath to protect the interest of Pakistan and not a single person.

"The PML-N wants the money deposited in Swiss banks to be brought back as it is the people's money. It is not Zardari's money," he said.

Sharif asked Gilani to step down so that fresh elections could be held in the country and a new prime minister could be chosen.

"I want to tell Zardari that the new premier will also have to write a letter to Swiss authorities (to reopen the graft cases)," he said.

The PML-N will organise protests in and outside parliament and speak to the lawyers' community to help in the move to oust Gilani, Sharif said.

Following the court's verdict, the federal cabinet decided yesterday that there was no need for Gilani to resign on moral grounds.

Speaking in parliament today, Gilani said he could be disqualified only by the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The premier challenged the PML-N to move a vote of no-confidence against him.
