The secretary of state said the US and the international community is ready to help Colombo in addressing the accountability issues.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today welcomed a UN resolution asking Sri Lanka to "credibly investigate" allegations of human rights violations during the country's civil war against the LTTE.
Welcoming the adoption of a US-backed resolution by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Clinton said the US and the international community is ready to help Colombo in addressing the accountability issues.
"The United States, together with the international community, sent a strong signal that Sri Lanka will only achieve lasting peace through real reconciliation and accountability, and the international community stands ready to help," Clinton said in a statement.
As next step, Clinton said the US and the international community is look to Sri Lanka to implement the constructive recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and take the necessary measures to address accountability.
"We are committed to working with the Sri Lankan government to help realise this goal, and I look forward to discussing future actions with Foreign Minister (GL) Pieris soon," she said.
"We will continue the productive working relationship we have with the Sri Lankan Government based on shared values, respect and constructive dialogue. Most important, we seek to strengthen our partnership with all the people of Sri Lanka," Clinton said.
Earlier at the UNHRC, the resolution was moved by the American Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe.
"Given the lack of action to implement the recommendations of the Sri Lankan government's own LLRC, and the need for additional steps to address accountability issues not covered in the LLRC report, it is appropriate that the UNHRC consider and adopt this moderate and balanced resolution," she said.
