Amir and Shashank star in a two-wicket win over Maharashtra in the U-19 Vinoo Mankad West Zone League.
Mumbai defeated Maharashtra by two wickets to register their second consecutive win in the U-19 Vinoo Mankad West Zone League here on Saturday.
But this time the victory was not as convincing as the win over Baroda, as they had to struggle against their arch-rivals. It was the 84-run sixth wicket partnership between Shashank Singh (42) and Amir Borania (40*) that guided them home in the 2nd round limited overs tie at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s ground in BKC.
Chasing a modest target of 202, Mumbai were off to a shaky start losing three wickets for 25 in five overs. However, the 51-run stand between opener Akhil Herwadkar (51) and Aakarshit Gomel (26) for the fourth wicket gave them some respite.
The scales tilted again in favour of Maharashtra as two crucial Mumbai batsmen — Herwadkar and Viral Parab were run out in consecutive overs. However, the sixth wicket pair of Shashank and Amir kept the team’s hopes alive. The duo rotated the strike constantly and punished the bad deliveries and went on to build a strong 84-run stand.
But two wickets of Shashank and Harmeet Singh in one over had Mumbai in trouble. A gutsy Amir stood strong at the pitch and guided the team to their second win with one ball to spare.
Earlier, the 50-over match was reduced to 43 overs due to early morning showers. The hosts won the toss and put the opponents in to bat on a difficult wicket. Skipper Ankit Bawne scored a patient 66. However, it was Gomel’s left-arm spin that stole the show as he bowled a tight spell of 9-0-18-3 that restricted Maharashtra to a modest 201/9 in 43 overs. Borania faced 45 balls and hit five boundaries in his unbeaten knock of 40. He said he enjoyed playing under pressure.
