Former ace Indian tennis player Vijay Amirtraj said here on Wednesday that the standards of Indian tennis are progressing day by day but the players need to work hard to reach the top spot in the international competitions.

Amirtraj was speaking to media after inaugurating a free knee consultation clinic of Apollo Hospital here.

"Obviously, it is not as good as western countries specially Spain, France or Germany or Sweden. We have a long way to go. What I do believe is that our training methods in India are getting so much better, so much streamlined and more disciplined, Amritraj said.

“ I think over the last 20 to 25 years, we have managed to come to a point where we are not willing to settle for second best," he added.

Speaking about other games, Amritraj said the performance of the Indian cricket team has been par excellence and complimented captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for being an ideal motivator.

In the 70s', Amritraj had lofted India to new heights when he led the national team to the Davis Cup finals to be played against South Africa but did not play due to the Pretoria's apartheid policy and thus forfeited the chance for India to be the champ nation.
