Former Davis Cupper and one of India’s best ever singles player Ramesh Krishnan feels the country is lagging behind in producing quality players due the lack of clay surfaces.
“Clay courts are ideal for nurturing young talents. Youngsters should play on clay as much as possible as it helps build leg muscles, improves skills, stamina and brings more discipline to the game,” the two-time US Open quarterfinalist told reporters on the sidelines of a news conference for the TCS Corporate Tournament Tennis Cup which starts at Bombay Gymkhana from Saturday.
The 48-year-old also felt that the game should go into smaller towns to unearth new talents. “We should take the game to smaller towns and provide kids with the best of facilities. You can see how smaller towns are producing quality cricketers. Even in Sweden most players come from smaller regions,” he added.
He was also concerned about the coaching standard in India. “We want coaches for different levels and we need good finishing teachers. Some who teach the business of winning,” he said.
