McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has hinted that 2008 Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton is suffering a crisis of confidence for the first time in his spectacular career, and needs to dig deep to come out of it.

He suggested that Hamilton’s "mental condition" has been affected by his poor results, but insisted that under-fire Hamilton can still win the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday to reverse his ebbing fortunes.

The Sun quoted Whitmarsh, as saying: "There is no one in this team who doesn't believe in Lewis Hamilton."

Hamilton heads to Korea after another wretched Grand Prix weekend in Japan. An error of judgment in qualifying wrecked his hopes of a shot at pole position.

He was forced to trundle home fifth in the race when a slow puncture was followed by his fourth clash of the season with Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

His woe was compounded as team-mate Jenson Button won on a day when Sebastian Vettel was crowned world champion.

Whitmarsh said: "Every international athlete has highs and lows, and this has been a difficult time. That's the way of life sometimes.”
