Feroz Ali Mollah beat Chirag Kumar in a playoff to emerge victorious in the PGTI Players Championship presented by the Willingdon Sports Club at their golf course on Friday.

Mollah, who was leading on day two and three, began the day on 15 under, three ahead of second placed Rashid Khan. It wasn’t a good day for him as he managed to increase his score only to 16 under.

On the other hand, seventh placed Chirag Kumar, who started at 10 under, increased his score to 16 under and had the opportunity to edge ahead on the final hole but missed his final putt. Mollah at that point had two more holes to clinch the title but could only finish them at par.

The play-off lasted for three holes. Both golfers finished the first hole on par with three strokes. The second, which was a four par, required five attempts from Mollah and Kumar to finish. The third was once again a three par, which Mollah finished in two shots win the title.

Kolkata-based Mollah said that he did not think he would have required a play-off to win the tournament. “I had a sizeable lead for two days and it seemed unlikely that a play-off would be required to finish it. I played badly on the 15th hole where I missed an easy putt and I had a bogey on the 16th. But I am happy that I won at the end,” he said.

The 41-year-old veteran said that he found the course challenging and enjoyable to play on. He said, “A few years ago, I had played here with some of the members of the club and compared to that, it is a huge improvement. The fairways could have been better but overall it’s an enjoyable course to play on.”

The victory was a big boost for Mollah, who had a couple of bad tournaments in the recent past. “The last two tournaments that I played I didn’t perform well. On the Asian tour, it was the Singapore Classic and on the Indian, it was in Bangalore. This win has given me a lot of confidence for the forthcoming tournaments,” said Mollah.
