Former India captain and State Wildlife Board vice-chairperson, Anil Kumble, aims to rope in cricketers and children to protect wildlife through the medium of photography.

Speaking on the sidelines of announcement of the Federation Internationale de I’art Photographique (FIAP) World Cup in Nature Photography 2010 competition in Bangalore on Saturday, he said: “Being an amateur photographer, it is like playing Test cricket where one stands in the gully and waits for the batsman to give a nick and capture the moment. One needs a lot of patience and I’m still a T20 player in wildlife photography. I need to play a longer innings to be a part of such a competition; I’ll participate in the next two years.”

“Wildlife photography is an expensive hobby. But in the digital era, it has become viable and cheap. But if one wants to protect wildlife it should be a hobby as one becomes passionate and nature in protected in the process. With this in mind, I’m not only making children aware of the importance of wildlife, but will also encourage photography,” he said.

Kumble said the photographs he clicked in Ranthambore when he clicked a tiger with its kill (a sambar deer) and that of a leopard on a treetop in Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary are his best so far.
Chief conservator of forests and Zoo Authority of Karnataka director, MN Jayakumar, said Bangalore is considered a hub for photographers, hence the city has been chosen to host the competition.

The jury comprises of Jacky Martin (France), Ricardo Bussi (Italy), Jill Sneesby (South Africa), B Srinivasa and TNA Perumal. Debashih Mitra, director (sales and marketing), Mercedes- Benz, said the company would soon organise a photography exhibition for children titled Road to the future.
