Burnley's Premier League adventure will last just one eventful season after a 4-0 home defeat by Liverpool on Sunday ensured their relegation with two matches remaining.

Burnley were promoted last season after a 33-year-absence from the top flight and got off to a flyer with victories over Manchester United and Everton inside their first three games.

They continued to perform well at home but their away form was appalling.

A draw at Manchester City in November and a win at Hull City two weeks ago brought a measly four-point return from their travels and ensured they followed Portsmouth back into the Championship, having controversially lost manager Owen Coyle to Bolton Wanderers in January.

Hull, who lost 1-0 at home to Sunderland on Saturday, will join them barring a mathematical miracle in the final matches.

Liverpool's win keeps them in with an outside chance of snatching fourth place. They are on 62 points, one behind Manchester City and two behind Aston Villa, who beat Birmingham City 1-0 with a late James Milner penalty on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur are fourth, also on 64 but with a game in hand on Villa and Liverpool.

Liverpool went ahead with a deflected Steven Gerrard shot after 52 minutes and the England midfielder made it 2-0 with a superb 25-metre curler seven minutes later.

Alberto Aquilani set up both goals and the Italian sent Maxi Rodriguez clear to score his first goal in English football after 74 minutes with Ryan Babel rounding off the win in stoppage time.

It was a good day all round for Merseyside as a stoppage-time penalty by Mikel Arteta snatched a 2-1 home win for Everton over Fulham.

Chelsea were playing Stoke City at Stamford Bridge later on Sunday where a win would put them back on top of the standings having been displaced by Manchester United after their 3-1 win over Spurs on Saturday.
