The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has announced it's building compatible devices for Android's new VR platform.
Huawei has announced that it’s building smartphones compatible with Google’s Daydream platform, and will have them ready to launch by the end of 2016.
In case you missed last night’s live coverage of Google I/O 2016, Daydream is a new optimised virtual reality platform for Android N. Google announced the platform at the event, saying it would require phones with a few minimum requirements to run, and it looks like Huawei will be the first out of the gates with compatible models.
Google also mentioned that companies like Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel are aall building Daydream-ready smartphones, and that new headsets and a controller will also be making appearances by the end of the year.
Huawei wrote in a press release, “Huawei looks forward to working with Google and other global industry leaders to build an ecosystem and bring rich and compelling Daydream experiences to users through transformative innovations in VR devices, applications and content.” It’s not yet clear, however, whether those Daydream device appearances from Huawei by 2016-end will just be announcements or actual launches.
Daydream is a VR optimisation for a lot of Android apps, especially gaming and content streaming. The Play Store has been redesigned for Daydream, allowing users to browse and download apps from a 360-degree shelf in VR. YouTube and Google Photo have also been optimised for VR, allowing you to view regular content on a virtual movie screen, aside from watching 360-degree videos in standard fashion. In addition HBO, Hulu, Netflix, and various news publications are also supported on Daydream.
