Over two dozen young Congress MPs congregated at Gandhi's residence on Tuesday evening, ostensibly for tea but the message was loud and clear to tell the leadership that youth is the flavour of this political season.
AICC spokesman Manish Tiwari said Gandhi was the in-charge of the frontal organisations of the youth Congress and the NSUI and had invited the young MPs for tea.
"The only agenda of the meeting was tea," Tiwari, who attended the meeting, told reporters.
Tiwari, a first time MP, who had stints in the Indian Youth Congress and the NSUI, was elected from Ludhiana in Punjab in the just concluded elections. Over two dozen young Congress MPs, which include Union ministers Ajay Maken and Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora, Sandeep Dikshit, Ashok Tanwar, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, Deepender Hooda, Naveen Jindal, Shruti Chaudhary, Mausam Noor, Hamidullah Sayeed, among others attended the 'tea party' which lasted for around two hours.
Sources said Gandhi shared his experience about the polls and also asked the newly elected MPs, several of them first timers, to explain their political experience. Asked whether the young MPs will be inducted into the Cabinet, Tiwari said the Constitutional scheme mandates that berth allocation is the prerogative of the prime minister.
Referring to the role of Gandhi in the elections, Tiwari said, "He has emerged as the symbol of the aspirations of young India."
The young MPs greeted Gandhi with a bouquet of flowers and congratulated him for the success of the Congress in the elections. Party sources said that there are around 40 young MPs who have been elected in the elections, giving a youthful dimension to the Lok Sabha.
From the youth Congress alone, 11 office-bearers were given party tickets out of which eight won from various states.
