The Anand police are groping in dark in connection with the sensational murder of Alpesh Patel alias Chacko, chairman of Charotar Education Society (CES) and independent councillor of Anand municipality, on Saturday.

Anand police sources said that police have formed four separate teams - of LCB, SOG and two from Anand police - to crack the case.

Patel was shot dead by four unidentified persons on Saturday, while he was  chatting with his friends outside a shop in Ganj Bazar, near his house. The assailants came there on motorcycles and opened fire at him. Patel, who sustained bullet injuries on his chest and head, was rushed to Karamsad hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
After firing, the assailants fled the area in a Santro car. The entire area was cordoned off by police, with vehicles being checked at entry and exit points of the city.

Anand police have launched a hunt to nab the assailants. Anand police station PI and investigating officer, DS Vaghela, said, “Police are trying their best to solve the case; however, till now no one has been detained or  interrogated. But, there are many suspects in the case.”

Sources said that Patel himself had a criminal background and wielded considerable clout in the area.

Apart from dealing in land and real estate broking, Patel had put huge amount of money in cricket satta, including the ongoing IPL matches. Vaghela also said that prima facie, business and political rivalry could be the  reasons behind the murder. Patel was also an accused in the infamous murder case of former Anand municipality president and Congress veteran Babulal Patel alias Baggi. He had also several cases in connection with post-Godhra riots and bootlegging against him.

Patel, as the chairman of Charotar Education Society (CES) ran more than 10 educational institutes. He had close relations with several state BJP leaders also.
