Under constant attack from rival parties for its proximity to Kalyan Singh, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday said the former BJP leader has always fought for the welfare of farmers like himself.

"We became one for the uplift of the farmers. Kalyan Singh has lived up to the dream of Ram Manohar Lohia," Yadav said while addressing a joint rally with Kalyan Singh at Alampur, 60 km from the district headquarters.

Yadav claimed that even when Kalyan Singh was in the BJP, he fought for the poor. He asserted that his friendship with the former BJP leader was for ever and not limited to the Lok Sabha elections.

Kalyan Singh told the gathering that he left the BJP on January 21 this year "forever."

"I have pledged to destroy the BJP and to ensure that NDA is never able to form another government at the Centre," he said, while seeking votes for SP candidate Zafar Alam.

Kalyan said the victory of Alam was a question of his prestige "as I had sought a ticket for him from Mulayam Singh Yadav."

He attacked the BJP by alleging that his erstwhile party had launched a disinformation campaign to wean away the Muslim voters from the SP.

"People are asked whether they would vote for a Muslim. Why not? They are also Indians and have made sacrifices during the freedom struggle," Kalyan said.

He said the May 7 election was an acid test for his reputation.

Both the leaders also attacked the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, accusing it of ignoring the interests of the farmers and the poor.

Mulayam Singh alleged that the state government was wasting money on erecting memorials and chopping down trees and added "We get fresh air from trees and not stones."

Kalyan said he would ensure that the "Mayajal" is destroyed beyond repair. "If the next government at the Centre is of our choice, we will ensure that the Mayawati government (in UP) is dismissed through constitutional means. There are several reasons to dismiss the government," he added.
