In the wake of the Indian Institute of Management’s (IIM) announcement to introduce online Common Admission Test (CAT), coaching centres across the city have geared up to prepare their students, providing them with the required knowledge and skills.

With more preparation required for the online test, it is believed that the fees in these coaching centres would also scale up by around 30-40 per cent.

Talking about how they are preparing their students for the online system of CAT, IMS centre director for Ahmedabad Biswaroop Padhi said, “We already have more than 100 test papers ready for online CAT, and have started training our students accordingly. The concept is new for us since we have been providing training students for online tests like Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) too.”

“The training procedure will differ depending on whether the new online exam would be computer based or computer adaptive,” added Padhi. While explaining the difference he said, “The training procedure will remain more or less the same if the online exam is computer based, which means that the computer will substitute the paper. However, if the test is computer adaptive, the training will focus more on accuracy. We are preparing our students for both the formats.”

Expressing similar doubts about what type of strategy the computer-assisted CAT will adopt, centre director of PT education in Ahmedabad Sameer Rai said, “We are adopting a wait and watch policy till IIM finally confirms whether the test will be a computer based or computer adaptive one. If it is computer adaptive, students will have to work harder to mitigate the chances of making mistakes.”

On their familiarity with online examination, Rai said, “We are 100 per cent prepared for the online test. In fact, PT has been regularly giving the online test for CAT since 2006. We are expecting the online system to start this year.”

Endeavor, a popular coaching institute in the city, is also ready with its own software for training and familiarising the students with the online test. Director of Endeavor Hitesh Devalia said, “Since the exact modality of the test is not yet revealed by IIMs, we are preparing around three models of the software.”

Talking about the probable type of test that would be adopted by IIM, Devalia said, “It is very likely that the test will be a computer-based one, but we are training our students for computer-adaptive test also.”
