Two more children, who had been hospitalised on Wednesday after consuming poisonous ice candy, died on Thursday. One child had died on Wednesday.

In another development, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s health department sealed the factory in Ghatlodia that manufactured the ice candy.
According to assistant administrator of Civil Hospital, Dr Gautam Sharma, "Mamta Thakor (10) died at 12.20 am whereas Jagdish Thakor (7) died at 9.05am on Thursday.

The rest of the seven members of the Thakor family are under observation in a critical condition. One of the family members, Somi Balaji (35), is out of danger, he added. Asked about the post-mortem (PM) reports of the three, Sharma said, "The PM and FSL reports are yet not ready and may take some time. However, as per the case history, the reason of death seems to be consumption of (poisonous) local ice candy."

The sealed ice candy factory is owned by one Ashok Prajapti, a resident of Chandlodia. Investigations at the shop in Ghatlodia, from where ice candies were purchased, led to recovery of plastic wrappers of Prajapati's factory.

AMC health officials said they had taken some samples from the factory and sealed it as a precautionary measure.

"We preferred to seal the factory as we found plastic wrappers mentioning the factory's name. We are awaiting reports of samples taken from the factory before removing the seal," said the chief health officer of AMC, SP Kulkarni. Kulkarni said the incident was not a result of contamination as it would have resulted in diarrhoea and vomiting. He said the department team reached the spot on Wednesday evening and checked the shop from where the ice candies, named 'pepsi-cola', were sold.
