Losing way and going to relatives' houses without informing parents contribute to over 50 per cent of cases of missing minors in the national capital, a Delhi Police survey has claimed.

Around 35.25 per cent of minors who went missing attributed the reason to losing the way while 29.84 per cent said they went to a friend's or relative's place without informing parents.

Out of a survey sample of 2,825 minors, who went missing and later traced, 960 said they lost their way while travelling. In the age group of 0-8 years, the figure was 624 while the figure for 8-12 years was 284.

Those who went to a friend's or relative's place without informing parents accounted for 843 out of the total survey sample. In this category, 491 belonged to the age group of 12-18 years.

According to the survey, elopment was the reason cited by 14.7 per cent of the sample size or 418 minors, all in the age group of 12-18 years, for they going missing.

Parent's mistreatment made six per cent (179) while study pressure made 3.78 per cent (107) to go out of their homes.

Separated parents were the reason for 21 minors (0.7 per cent) going missing while search for jobs made 29 (one per cent) to go out, the survey said.

Around 4.2 per cent (118) of minors went missing with one parent or a close family member while 1.45 per cent (41) went to a holy place without informing parents, the survey said.

Delhi Police has made it mandatory the registration of FIRs in each incident of untraced girl child of 18 years or below and untraced boys of 12 years or below, a senior police official said.

Police has been instructed to register FIRs in case of a missing person reports lodged in the past three years in a order issued on March 18, the official said.

A Missing Person Desk is also being set up at all police stations in the capital besides maintaining files on missing persons.

All ACPs and SHOs will ensure that a missing person desk is constituted at police stations where Inspector in charge of Investigations will be assigned as its Registering Officer.
