The effect of the global slowdown on placements of premier institutes of India notwithstanding, two students of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) have bagged offers of more than Rs12 lakh per annum from law firm Amarchand Mangaldas.

GNLU director Bimal Patel said 40 out of the batch of 137 students have been placed, while 50 have opted to pursue an LLM degree after completion of their LLB course in May. He said the institute was aiming for 100 per cent placement of the batch graduating this year.

Placements committee in-charge professor Ramesh Kumar said firms like Bajaj Alliance as well as public-sector undertakings (PSUs) had visited the campus for the placements.
He, however, said that the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections had held back some state-owned firms from visiting the university. “The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and some PSUs were scheduled to participate in the recruitment session. We hope that things will start moving faster after the polls are over,” he said. Meanwhile, GNLU is pitching for air and space law with the central government.

Patel was of the opinion that there should be a uniform space law, which will be implacable in cases such as the 2003 Columbia space shuttle crash. The law university is looking to work closely with the state government, providing advisory services, including for the formation of a department on climate change. Patel said they were already working with the Gujarat high court to help it clear the backlog of legal cases.
