The standoff between the Sabarmati Jail inmates and the prison staff, which escalated into a bloody confrontation on Saturday, ended on Sunday with prisoners calling off their indefinite hunger strike.

According to jail sources, the agitating prisoners ended their fast, which began on March 25, on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, 12 jail officials and a number of inmates, including some of the Ahmedabad serial blasts accused, were injured during a confrontation.  The injured blasts accused included Sajid Mansuri, Rafiyuddin Kapadia, Imran Sheikh, Yunus Mansoori, Usman Agarbattiwala, Abbas Umer Sameja, Shamsuddin Sheikh, Qayamuddin Kapadia and Javed Siddiqui.

Jail superintendent V Chandrashekhar said, “The condition of jail inmates who were injured in the clash is fine and they are undergoing treatment in jail premises itself.”

Chandrasekhar added that according to jail manual, any form of hunger strike undertaken by prisoners amounts to mutiny. The prisoners were on a fast since Wednesday. They were demanding the removal of V Chandrashekar. Following the murder of Suresh Kakadia, a Sabarmati Jail inmate, by another prisoner Mahendra Vala on March 1, Sabarmati jail was in news for its lackadaisical security arrangements.
Sources said that immediately after assuming charge, Chandrashekhar took various steps to improve the security arrangement within jail premises. He tightened the leash on jail inmates and his strict measures were the cause of unrest among prisoners.

Chandrashekhar said, “We no longer allow the inmates to freely roam around the premises.”  Meanwhile, the relatives of the injured jail inmates protested outside the premises on Sunday. The agitating family members demanded that the prisoners should be treated in Civil hospital.
