Realising the seriousness of protecting coastal areas in the aftermath of Mumbai attack, the Coast Guard has decided to develop North-West Command in Gujarat in near future. The command will have all ultra-modern facilities to protect coast and one vessel from Mumbai will be placed in Porbandar permanently.

The new command will have its headquarters at Gandhinagar from where all activities of Coast Guard in Gujarat will be monitored. The command will have a fleet of modern vessels, trained officials and ammunitions to protect sea coast from any possible attack or infiltration. Again, Coast Guard also has plans to appoint top-rank officials in the new command for looking after its activities.

Rajendra Singh, inspector general of Coast Guard (West) said, “There is a need for surveillance along Gujarat coastline and so the decision of creating a separate command was taken. Probably, the command will get commissioned in May and it will have all ultra-modern equipments and facilities needed to protect the long coastline of the state.

Coast Guard has received nod from the authorities concerned. In addition to this, Coast Guard will send a vessel from Mumbai after April 14 which will be permanently based at Porbandar. The vessel will keep an eye on the coast and prevent untoward incidents.”

Singh was in Surat on Friday to attend the launching ceremony of CGS Samundra Paheredar at the ABG Shipyard. Paheredar is basically a pollution-control vessel and it is the first vessel in Asia-Pacific region having ability of recovering spilled oil from sea waters. Apart from this, it can perform all activities of warship or surveillance vessel in the sea. It will be one of the largest vessels in the Coast Guard, after the vessel is built in the coming six months. “It will be enhancing the pollution control capacity of Indian Coast Guard and we feel honoured that it will join our fleet. ” Singh added.
