The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have plans of capturing all sectors. After securing the cooperative sector and cricket, it is laying its eyes on the law fraternity. The legal cell of the BJP is planning to recruit more lawyers in order to strengthen its base across the state.

The party is aiming on capturing power is all elections, from the civic polls to the Lok Sabha elections. It has renamed its legal cell as the lawyers’ cell and has also changed its objectives.

In addition to taking legal advice from the lawyers during adverse circumstances, the BJP plans to use them in all party- and poll-related work.

“During the elections of 157 Bar associations, the BJP was successful in pushing its candidates and came out victorious. There are 217 Bar associations in the state and the party plans on placing more and more lawyers in positions of power in them,” a source in the legal cell of the BJP said.

The source further said, “The BJP has captured the Bar Council of Gujarat, which is the apex body of the lawyers’ fraternity in the state. The Bar Council of Gujarat was earlier ruled by Congress leader Ghanshyam Amin. Now, Vijay Patel, a former MLA of the BJP and a senior lawyer, is the chairman of the council. The post of executive chairperson of the Bar Council of Gujarat is likely to go to Monali Bhatt, who is the niece of speaker of the Gujarat assembly, veteran leader Ashok Bhatt.”

The Congress, however, is not happy with the development and is blaming the BJP for politicising the sector. “The lawyers’ fraternity is wise enough and will not allow the BJP to fulfil its agenda,” senior Congress leader Ghanshyam Amin, who was earlier chairman of the Bar Council of Gujarat, said.

Krishnakant Vakharia, chairman of the legal cell of the Congress, said that the BJP is injecting politics into this professional sector.

Meanwhile, the BJP does not believe there is anything wrong with its agenda. “Politics and lawyers form two sides of the same coin,” JJ Patel, convenor of the lawyers’ cell of the BJP, said.

“We have 99 BJP members at the post of president of different Bar associations. Ten presidents are supporters of the BJP. On the other side, 22 Bar associations have neutral presidents and only 24 have presidents who belong to or support the Congress,” he said.
