Ridiculing the Third Front, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday, expressed doubt over its longevity and said the new grouping was having as many prime ministerial aspirants as the number of parties in it.

"Who knows when, who and where and along with whom they will remain," she said while addressing the "Bharat Nirman Rally" here as part of the party's campaigning in the state.

"There are as many prime ministers (aspirants) as the number of parties in it," she said, indicating that the nation cannot progress under such a dispensation.

She said there is talk of a new front and discussion on parties constituting it.

For political stability, the country needs a strong, farsighted and experienced government with an able and honest leadership, she said.

Gandhi said some people are jealous of India's progress and place hurdles in its path of development. "Terrorism is such an attempt. It is a challenge," she said.

"But we are not like BJP party or BJP people, who had taken terrorists lodged in our jails like guests to Afghanistan," she said, referring to the Kandahar hijack episode in which the then union minister Jaswant Singh had accompanied terrorists to that country in exchange of release of hostages.

She said that she wants to instill trust in the people that the government is fully capable of fighting terror.

Gandhi said the UPA is seeking people's mandate based on the work it has done in the past five years, alleging that
during the NDA regime, all sections of the society were sad" because of its "mis-rule".

Talking about the BJP rule in Karnataka, she said "communalism ideology" has exceeded all its limits in the state.

"In Karnataka there is corruption everywhere and law and order has ended," she said.

She said the UPA has done many works in the last five years including "Bharat Nirman" programme, national rural employment guarantee scheme, mid-day meal programme, which she claimed benefitted 15 crore poor students.

The government also opened universities, polytechnics and IITs and introduced the farmer loan waiver packages, she said.
