The global hype created by the recent Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit and the perseverance of dedicated groups of non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs) seem to be paying off. A delegation from Canada’s fastest growing province, Saskatchewan, visited Ahmedabad on Wednesday to invite enterprises from Gujarat to invest in their minerals and agri-rich region.

“World’s largest diamond reserves are in our state. We now want companies from Gujarat to help us develop diamond trade,” said Lyle Stewart, minister of enterprise and innovation, Saskatchewan, in an exclusive interview with DNA.

Saskatchewan also has large reserves of oil and gas, which need to be extracted. “We want companies from Gujarat and India to come and invest in these fields by undertaking exploration and investment here. Currently, our province supplies more oil to the USA than even Kuwait,” said Stewart.

After a four-day stay in Mumbai, the Canadian delegation came to Ahmedabad, from where it will go on to Delhi. When asked why they had decided to come here, Stewart said that people in his province were enterprising, like those in Gujarat.

“As the Saskatchewan population of is very small and we have huge mineral and agriculture wealth, we want enterprises from here to come and invest in our province,” he added.

Later in the day, during a meeting with chief minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday afternoon, Gujarat’s principal secretary for energy and the managing director of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) were present. President of the Gujarati Business Association of Canada, Mukund Purohit, who was instrumental in bringing the Canadian delegation to the state, told DNA that, at the meeting with the CM, it was decided that a team from Gujarat would soon go to Saskatchewan.

“Gujarat is interested in exploring the oil and gas as well as diamond sectors in Canada. The two states are also looking at collaborating on research for the animal university being set up in Gujarat,” said Purohit.

For immigration-crazy Gujaratis, the province of Saskatchewan is not that well known. This state has a 40 per cent share in the world’s potash production, controls 26 per cent of global uranium output and 46 per cent of Canada’s farmlands, and is the world’s largest exporter of chickpeas.

Once the Indian government signs a bilateral nuclear cooperation treaty with Canada, the province can begin supplies of uranium to nuclear power plants in the country.
The state is Canada’s second largest oil producer, having 26,000 operating wells, and is the third largest natural gas producer, with around 20,000 operating wells, contributing around 17 per cent of Canada’s oil production. But, a lot of the potential is yet to be tapped.
