Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa launched six plans on Tuesday under the ABIDe’s ‘Plan Bengaluru 2020’. They include expansion of the second phase of the Namma Metro project, making the Outer Ring Road signal-free, introduction of the Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus service for the city’s Central Business District, road repairs and making the city safe for pedestrians.

“I direct the BBMP commissioner to instruct officers to inspect works every three hours in the morning and evening; a weekly report should be submitted,” said Yeddyurappa at the launch, stressing the need to improve the quality of work done by the Palike. “Are engineers not paid for this?” he asked.

He explained that delay in projects result in cost escalation: “It is people’s money that is spent; engineers should ensure quality work in the shortest span of time possible.” The CM said that work remains stagnant despite the allocation of funds. “Every municipal corporation is given Rs100 crore for development works, but in many cases, work has not yet begun,” he said.

However, an upset BBMP Commissioner S Subramanya said, “I think we are on the right track. We will consider the chief minister's advice and take the necessary steps.”
