A college teacher was assaulted on Tuesday after he tried to prevent miscreants from harassing a woman student near Markham Road. Shankar Subramanyam, 48, teaches labour legislation at St Joseph’s Commerce College. After an evening class on Tuesday, he accompanied fourteen students for a fruit juice near the St Patrick’s Church complex.

A group of men were trailing them, and he saw one of them groping a student from behind. An altercation ensued after which he persuaded the men to leave. With no fruit juice available there, Subramanyam asked his students to wait as he looked for another shop. When he did not return after ten minutes, his students found him lying bleeding near Oceana restaurant.

Witnesses said that three men on a motorcycle had hit him on the head with a wooden plank. As he fell, they continued to kick him until he lost consciousness. The students took him to HOSMAT hospital, where doctors conducted a CT scan. Subramanyam has been placed under observation for 48 hours. He is also a visiting faculty member at the IIM (B).
