NEW DELHI: Pressure is mounting on the UPA government to clarify its position on the statement made by minority affairs minister AR Antulay on ATS chief Hemant Karkare’s death in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

The BJP-led opposition rocked both houses of parliament for the third successive day on Monday. The CPM also pressed the government to come clear on the issue.

Agitated BJP MPs rushed to the wells of both the houses and demanded Antulay’s dismissal. The two houses were repeatedly adjourned.

The protests became intense in the Lok Sabha when a defiant Antulay poked fun at BJP members by flashing a thumbs-up sign. It was apparently to dare them to continue with the protests. There were three adjournments in the lower house after which it rose for the day.

External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Rajya Sabha that the Centre would make a statement on the issue on Tuesday. Either Mukherjee or home minister P Chidambaram would make a statement on the issue in both the houses. But the assurance failed to pacify the BJP members.

The CPM also put pressure on the government on the Antulay issue. “Antulay is a member of the Union cabinet. So, it’s the government’s duty to make a statement on the issue,” said CMP leader Sita Ram Yechury said.

I am shocked: Shabana
Nashik: Actor and former MP Shabana Azmi said AR Antulay’s remark on the death of ATS chief Hemant Karkare may damage the country’s integrity. Azmi, who visited the Dadasaheb Phalke Memorial here on Sunday evening, said: “I was surprised on hearing Antulay’s statement about the death of Karkare. Instead of a political leader, I have faith in the people of my country.”
