NEW DELHI: Minority affairs minister A.R. Antulay's resignation will dominate Parliament proceedings on Monday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said on Sunday.
"Antulay is repeatedly speaking a lie on the killing of (police officer) Hemant Karkare. His irresponsible statement as a cabinet minister has weakened India's position on Mumbai terror attack internationally," Hussain said.
Antulay had suggested that Karkare's death could be linked to the Sept 29 Malegaon bombing he was investigating and in which members of Hindu radical groups are the main suspects. Karkare was killed Nov 26 in the Mumbai terror attacks.
Urging prime minister Manmohan Singh to immediately sack Antulay from the cabinet, Hussain said the issue would dominate in parliament, if the government's statement on the issue is not acceptable to the people of the country.
He said former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif's statement tells the truth on the entire episode.
Sharif has confirmed that Mohammad Ajmal , the only terrorist caught alive during the attacks, is a Pakistani, Hussain said.
While Pakistani leader Sharif helps us (India), Antulay is helping Pakistan. Antulay's statement divided the nation, which was united for war against terror, he said.
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday came out in defence of Antulay, saying the minister has been misreported.
Meanwhile, the government's clarification on the issue is expected to come in parliament on Monday.
Leader of the Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee assured the house last week that the government would come with a suitable reply before the current session ends.
The Congress core committee, which met here Saturday, discussed the issue.
Highly placed government sources have said Antulay had sent his resignation to prime minister Manmohan Singh after the uproar over his remarks in the Lok Sabha - and outside - on Karkare's killing but the minister refused to either confirm or deny whether he had put in his papers.
