BETUL (MP): A three-day-old infant died in the ICU of a government hospital here after he was allegedly severely bitten by red ants who even made a hole in his left ear's outer portion.

Collector Arun Kumar Bhatt ordered the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr A K Dixit to conduct an inquiry into the matter on Saturday and complete the probe in a weeks time.

Thereafter, action would be taken against the person found guilty, Bhatt stated.

Parents of the newborn boy Jumma Shah and Shahnaz Bee alleged that their three-day old son had died on Friday of ant bite.

They said that they repeatedly informed the medical staff at the hospital that there were ants in the ICU, where their son was kept, and that the ants were biting him.

They claimed that they requested the staff to get the area cleaned but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

According to Shah and his wife, after the death of their son, the nurses in the ICU asked them to immediately take away the body.

Shah, resident of Tilak ward, alleged that after the incident he went to their area police station to register a complaint but police refused to file an FIR saying that the area in which the hospital is located doesnot fall under their jurisdiction.

"We went to the concerned police station but could not find anyone there," he said.

Shahnaz has given birth to two baby boys in the hospital on December 3.

After the delivery, the twins were taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) and the next morning one of them was shifted with the mother while the other was held back in the ICU.

Family members after noticing red ants in the ICU had informed the doctor on duty who in turn had asked the nurses to do the needful, Shah said.

On Friday morning too, the ants were noticed around the newborn and the hospital staff were informed but they did not pay heed and the baby boy died around 1400 hours, he added.

The hospital civil surgeon Dr Rashmi Kumre said that she was in the hospital on Friday and even took some rounds but no one bought to her notice that ants has bitten the kid.

She said that the newborns were given sugar water that may have attracted the ants.
