KOLKATA: Reckitt Benckiser, maker of Dettol, Mortein, Cherry Blossom and other well-known brands, is weighing plans to set up a manufacturing unit. The plant, a multi-product facility, could come up in the next 18-24 months.

Revealing the plans to DNA Money, Chander Mohan Sethi, regional director, South Asia, and chairman and managing director, Reckitt Benckiser India, said the company would be looking at “economically viable” areas for the new unit.

Though he declined to divulge the investment earmarked for the new facility, he indicated that, typically, Rs 50-100 crore would be required for such a unit.

Existing units are at various locations, including Uttaranchal, Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The company is looking at organic growth as a strategy. For instance, the household lavatory cleaner and liquid handwash penetration in India is at a mere 21% and 7%, respectively. “There is a huge opportunity for organic growth,” Sethi said.

Taking into account the inflationary environment, Sethi revealed that the company is also looking at unveiling lower unit packs - especially in the surface cleaners space. “We are conscious as a company that, given the difficult inflationary environment, the consumer needs to be given products of their choice at a right price and size,” he said.

Though Sethi declined to reveal the turnover, he said the company was targeting at least 20% growth this fiscal. Unofficial sources put the turnover of Reckitt Benckiser at Rs 1,200 crore.

The company is not listed in India. This is because as a policy, all the companies in each country are subsidiaries while the parent, with headquarters in Slough, near London, is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
