BANGALORE: At a time when the BJP is desperately looking for more allies by adopting a moderate approach before the Lok Sabha polls, party chief Rajnath Singh upped the ante by taking the BJP on a hardline Hindutva route.

From raking up the demand for abrogating Article 370, resettling Kashmiri Pandits in a specially earmarked place in the valley, nationalisation of Amarnath Yatra route to insults being heaped on national symbols taken from Hindu culture, apart from the issues of declaring Ram Setu a national monument and condemnation of Swami Lakshmanand, Singh went on to take a line that would gladden any VHP leader.

As it is, BJP’s poll preparations received a major setback on the day its national executive meet began as party’s vice-president Kalyan Singh and general secretary Vinay Katiyar failed to turn up at the executive.

Though both cited health reasons, the actual reason is stated to be their aversion to an alliance with Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in UP having 80 Lok Sabha seats.

In his presidential address, Rajnath Singh almost took a cue from the VHP in demanding that those who burnt the national flag in Srinagar during recent protests, should be prosecuted for sedition. He also congratulated the Sri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti for succeeding in defeating the separatists.

Singh accused the UPA government of demeaning the nationals symbols derived from Hindu culture. Citing the example of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan logo having a lotus and sun being changed into the one having a crescent moon and stars, he apprehended that the government might contemplate changing the logos of the supreme court, Navy and Air Force which had Sanskrit shlokas depicting Hindu gods.
