NEW DELHI: CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan, who was taken ill while on way to flood-hit Saharsa and Madhepura districts in Bihar, was on Monday flown to the national capital admitted to AIIMS.

The 82-year-old Communist leader was detected with a stone in his gall bladder and doctors said they may conduct a surgery on him, party leaders said.

Bardhan was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Barauni Refinery Hospital in Bihar yesterday after he complained of diarrhoea and shivering, forcing him to call off the visit to the flood-ravaged areas.

He was flown to the capital and admitted to AIIMS on Monday afternoon.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu enquired about his health over phone, the party said in a statement.

Bardhan had gone to Patna to attend the CPI State Council meeting yesterday. However, the conference could not take place as most of the party leaders were unable to reach there due to the floods.

The CPI leader then decided to visit the flood-affected areas in Begusarai.
