Under attack from the Left for toeing American line, govt condemns Washington’s posturing on Iran

NEW DELHI: India reached out to old friend Iran and used tough diplomatic language to condemn any attempt to use force against the Islamic Republic. The condemnation came amidst reports of the US and Israel planning strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Terming the move to use military force as “unacceptable international behaviour,” India released a strong statement in support of Iran.

At a time when the Left has withdrawn support to the government over the contentious nuclear agreement, the UPA government hopes standing by Iran will silence its critics who fear the country’s sovereign foreign policyis at stake.

“India is gravely concerned at these statements threatening the use of military force against Iran. India is against any such military attack, which constitutes unacceptable international behaviour. There is no military solution to the issues that are being discussed between Iran and the international community. India continues to support negotiations and diplomacy, rather than the threat or use of force,” Navtej Sarna, spokesman for the foreign office told reporters on Monday. He added a military strike on Iran would have disastrous consequences for the region and affect the livelihood of five million Indians who live and work in the Gulf. “India calls upon all concerned governments to exercise restraint and choose the peaceful path of negotiations.”

Iran entered the Indian domestic political debate when New Delhi voted twice against Tehran and with Washington in Vienna. India’s decision to go with the US created a major controversy.

New Delhi has always taken a neutral stand over the nuclear stand-off between US and Iran, pointing out that the way forward was through negotiations but that Iran must also respect its international commitments. Reiterating this position now means India will not hesitate to criticise the US, and therefore fears that its foreign policy will be dictated by Washington are unfounded.
