20 will attend the celebrations in Maldives on July 8

HYDERABAD: Prime minister Manmohan Singh’s call to lead a life of austerity seems to have fallen on deaf ears as far as AP chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and his cabinet colleagues are concerned.

For the third time in a row, the AP CM is celebrating his birthday outside the country. Reddy’s 59th birthday on July 8th will be celebrated on the scenic islands of Maldives with a retinue of 20 persons comprising family and friends.

And as in the past, this will also double up as a strategy session for the forthcoming elections.

The entourage left for Maldives on Saturday. Wife Vijayalakshmi, son YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his family, daughter Sharmila, evangelist son-in-law Anil Kumar and grandchildren accompanied him. They plan a peaceful prayer meeting at a historical church on the island in the morning and a lavish dinner aboard a specially chartered ship for the evening.

Reddy’s man-Friday Suridu and friend, Rajya Sabha member and chief strategist KVP Ramachandra Rao have been invited to the birthday bash along with their families.

This is not the first time the CM has celebrated his birthdays outside the country. He went to Jerusalem and Rome for his 57th birthday bash. His 58th birthday was celebrated in the US. It was not clear if the bash was at state’s cost.

However, Reddy is not the only minister who has chosen not to pay heed to the PM’s call for austerity. There are several state ministers who are currently in the US to attend the annual celebrations of the American Telugu Association. Nearly 75 VVIPs including officials from the state are attending in the event.
