After the arrest of two state policemen for rape, an IG faces molestation probe

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police are facing a serious image crisis. Close on the heels of the arrest and suspension of two policemen in an alleged rape case, a high-profile cop is facing probe for allegedly molesting a woman.

Inspector general (IG) MS Ahlawat is said to have committed the offence when he was superintendent of police, Yamunanagar.

The inquiry was instituted this week after the victim filed a fresh complaint against Ahlawat six years after the incident and days after the suspension of a station house officer in Karnal for allegedly raping a girl in police station.

“The repeated incidents have certainly tarnished the image of the police and are a matter of serious concern,” DGP Rajiv Dalal said.

The DGP said in view of the incidents, Haryana Police had decided to carefully examine reputations and service records of officers before assigning them jobs.

Dalal said he had directed all superintendents of police to screen records of personnel and deal sternly and promptly with undesirable elements. He has also suggested the seniors to inspect all police stations and posts in the next one week.

The DGP has directed inspectors general of police to extensively tour the districts in their ranges and interact with policemen at all levels. He has instructed them to ensure speedy disposal of complaints and prompt registration of FIRs, especially in case of crime against women.

Crime against women is rising in Haryana, with over 800 incidents of rape and molestation recorded last year.

According to the national crime record bureau, the involvement of policemen in molestations and rapes is particularly high in Haryana.
