KOZHIKODE: Two people, who were reportedly 'hired' to appear in place of the original candidates for the Aligarh Muslim University's Engineering entrance examination, were arrested here, police said on Sunday.

Javed Hassan of Calcutta and Saurav Kumar of Patna, were handed over to the police yesterday by the authorities of the Feroke College, the varsity's only test centre in South India, after they grew suspicious over the dissimilarity in the photos in the application form and hall ticket, police said.

The duo, who had never seen the original candidates, were allegedly hired by some agents to appear in place of Ubaida Khan of Uttar Pradesh and Navas of Bihar.

Cases had been registered for impersonation and cheating against them, police said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to having received Rs.75,000 each as advance for appearing in the test, police said, adding they were also assured of another Rs.two lakh each if the results turned out to be `favourable'.

A total of 234 candidates sat for the entrance test, of which 30 of them were from other states.
