Two property dealers among those killed

NEW DELHI: Delhi is already called the national rape capital. On Thursday the National Capital Region (NCR) drew closer to earning the dubious distinction of being called the national crime region instead, with five murders reported in 15 hours, or one murder every three hours.

Two property dealers were gunned down in separate incidents in Gurgaon and North Delhi.

Nahar Singh, a 32-year-old man, was shot dead by some unidentified assailants outside Roseland Public School near National Highway 8 in Gurgaon early on Thursday. The incident occurred around 8am, when Singh was returning after dropping his son and nephew at the school, the police said.

“Two motorcycle-borne assailants fired indiscriminately at Singh outside the school campus in the morning while the he was returning home after dropping his son. Singh ran inside the school to save himself but the assailants chased him and fired again, killing him on the spot,” said Mohinder Lal, commissioner of police, Gurgaon. Singh was rushed to the nearby Pushpanjali Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The unidentified assailants left their weapons on the spot after gunning down Singh. Police have recovered two countrymade revolvers from the scene of crime. But the police claim that investigations had given many vital clues. “We have taken statements of people present at the scene of crimes and investigations are on in full swing. We will nab the culprits very soon,” Lal said. Police said they suspected a property dispute in the case but added that they were looking at all possible angles to the crime.

In the second case, Saleem Khan, a property dealer, was gunned down by unidentified men in Bhajanpura, northwest Delhi. The incident occurred late  on Wednesday, when the assailants shot Khan, a resident of East Delhi, in the back, while he was on his driving his bike on the way to meet some people.

He was rushed to GTB hospital by people present at the scene of crime but was declared brought dead. A case of murder has been registered and police are on the lookout for the accused.

“A business rivalry or monetary dispute could be the motive for the murder. We are investigating the case and statements of the witnesses are being taken,” said a senior police official.

In another incident, a cable television operator was shot dead by four assailants in Modi Nagar, in Ghaziabad district. The attackers shot dead Dhiraj Tyagi, 36, late on Wednesday night. Tyagi sustained gunshot injuries in his chest and abdomen. Residents of the area rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

But the day began with the murder of a milk vendor over  a trivial issue. Police said 25-year-old Rakesh Kumar, who ran Pal Dairy in Seelampur, northeast Delhi, was stabbed to death by a milkman, Parveen, at around 7 am. Parveen came to Rakesh’s dairy and asked him to keep his empty milk containers at the latter’s shop. When Rakesh refused, an altercation took place.

“Parveen, in a fit of rage, drew out a pair of scissors and hit Rakesh. It pierced through his heart and he died on the spot,” deputy commissioner of police (northeast Delhi) Jaspal Singh said. A search is on for Parveen.

Another murder was that of 25-year-old Ramesh, who hailed from Pondicherry. Ramesh, who worked in a restaurant in Dwarka Sector 6, was found stoned to death at his rented accommodation in Dabri area of southwest Delhi. Police said his room mates, Selvaraj, Madhu and Ramesh —all from Tamil Nadu —were missing after Ramesh’s body was found in the room.
