Rajasthan, where communal tension flared up on Saturday, remained peaceful

PATNA/JAIPUR: Ten people, including two women were killed in separate incidents of firing, clashes and lynching in Bihar, officials said on Sunday. The situation in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh and Tonk, which witnessed communal tension on Saturday, was peaceful on Sunday, police said.

Bachchi Devi, 45, was beaten to death by Holi revellers, when she protested against their abusive language at Sundra in Bihar’s Nawada district, SP Vinod Kumar said. In another incident in the state, holi revellers shot dead two tribals, idetified as Ram Soren and Nathivi Hembrom at Khari basti in Kishanganj district, police said. In the same district, one Sahadduin Khatun was strangled to death allegedly by her in-laws after she locked herself up in a quarrel with them over smearing colour on her face in Mahin village, they said.

In a separate incident, three persons were gunned down by unidentified assailants who fired randomly following a trivial dispute at Nag-Asthan village in Patna district today, SSP Kundan Krishnan said. In Sheikhpura district, PDS dealer Sudhir Kumar was shot dead by unidentified persons, police said, adding that old enmity was believed to be the reason behind the killing. An official report said one person was gunned down by unidentified persons after he picked up a quarrel with them at Samastipur on Saturday evening. Another person was killed in Begusarai town on Saturday night. Though situation was peaceful, there was no relaxation in curfew in Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, imposed after Saturday’s incidents.

There have also been no arrests so far in this connection, the superintendent of police Mahesh Goyal said. On Saturday, tension was triggered in the town over a minor argument between members of two communities after one group burnt down a motorcycle of another group. Later, at least 18 persons, including five policemen were injured and dozen shops torched by an angry mob. Police had to fire rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse clashing groups after the incident and curfew was clamped in the town. Meanwhile, in Tonk city the situation was peaceful on Sunday. The situation turned tense on Saturday when members of a community were taking out a procession and youth of another community allegedly used abusive language.
