MUMBAI: Not satisfied with MNS chief Raj Thackeray's reply to a show-cause notice on extension of the gag order against him, the city police have sent a fresh letter asking him a few more questions.

"We are not satisfied with Thackeray’s reply due to which a supplementary has been sent to him. A decision on the extension is only possible on Monday, which is the next working day," said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

In his reply, Raj had said that expressing his thoughts was his fundamental right and claimed that there will be no law and problem if he is allowed to speak. The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code to maintain peace and tranquility.

On Friday, MNS cancelled a rally to be held at Shivaji Park on Sunday alleging that the civic body, ruled by Shiv Sena-BJP, had declined ground permission due to pressure from the police. The city police asked the BMC not to provide Raj Thackeray the Shivaji Park ground for rally on March 9.

"The area’s residents do not want such rallies to be held," said joint commissioner of police (law and order), KL Prasad. When asked about the decision on the whether gag order should be imposed further on Raj, Prasad said, "The concerned DCP will study the reply and will decide whether the gag order should be imposed further. This is a quasi judicial process in which the concerned officer decides based upon the written reply and the prevailing situation. I do not have any control over it."

In wake of the targeting of the north Indians by the MNS, on February 11, the police issued a prohibitory order restraining Raj from making provocative statements at rallies or to the press. It was renewed on February 25 for a period of eight days and has lapsed on March 3. When asked if Raj is free to make statements now that the order is not in place, Prasad, said, "We have never said that Raj cannot hold any media briefings or rally, but he shouldn’t make provocative statements."

Meanwhile, deputy chief minister RR Patil had said that decision on the extension of gag order on Raj Thackeray would be made on March 10.
