Taj, Oberoi and ITC among players planning hotels there

KOLKATA: Mauritius is wooing Indian hospitality players to set up five-star properties in the country.

Vijay Haulder, deputy director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) said Indian hospitality majors like Taj Group, Oberois, ITC Welcomgroup and Select Holiday Resorts are in talks with the Mauritius government for possible projects in that country.

Also, Sagar Hotels, which already has two premium properties in Mauritius, is planning to set up its third hotel there.

Taj and Oberoi groups already have a property in Mauritius -Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and Oberoi Hotel, Mauritius, respectively.

The Mauritius government, on its part, is acting as a facilitator by offering Indian players state land on lease for 25 years.

“These players are all in the process of identifying lands. They will build and manage the
properties,” added Haulder.

The average investment per room will be about 4-5 million Mauritian rupee, said Haulder.

The country, at present, has a cache of 12,000 rooms, mainly in the premium category. However, with tourist arrivals targeted to reach one million by the end of this year, there is a need to add around 1,500 rooms per year.

“Indian hospitality players could add 5-6 properties (about 1,500 rooms) over three-years assuaging the room shortage to some extent,” Haulder said.

MTPA is promoting Mauritius as an upmarket destination where the average cost of stay can be around $200 per day. Consequently, the marketing peg hinges on the premium plank, with “CEOs and captains of industry” as the target segment.

In 2008-end, India’s share is likely to be 50,000 of the targeted one million tourists, a 15% increase over 2007.
