Intelligence inputs hint at strikes in the capital on the anniversary of the Samjhauta Express blasts

NEW DELHI: A high alert was sounded in the national capital on Monday following intelligence reports of a possible terror attack.

“We have received intelligence inputs that some militant outfits were planning terror strikes in the city on several prominent locations. Security has been beefed up and all entry and exit points from the city have been sealed,” Karnal Singh, joint commissioner (special cell) said.

The alert assumes significance as it came on the first anniversary of the Samjhauta Express blasts that claimed 68 lives near New Delhi last year. The warning also coincided with the general elections in neighbouring Pakistan, which also witnessed terror strikes on Monday.

Singh said all major markets, public places, shopping malls, inter-state bus stands, railway stations and metro stations were under tight surveillance.

“Bomb disposal units and dog squads have been alerted and intensive checks at all possible terror targets have been ordered,” a senior police official said adding that there was no need to panic.

A close watch is being kept on cyber cafes and hotels and guest houses are also being searched as part of the drill. Also, dealers providing mobile phone connections have been asked to maintain a list of their customers.

This is the second such input of a possible terror attack in Delhi in the last two months. In January, the police had received inputs that a militant outfit was planning to blow up the Akshardham temple in east Delhi.
