BJP goes a step further by alleging nexus between Cong and MNS

NEW DELHI: A day after leader of opposition LK Advani reminded Raj Thackeray of provisions of Indian constitution, union human resource development (HRD) minister Arjun Singh said the Centre should intervene in the situation in the wake of the attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra. The BJP gave a new twist to the issue, accusing Congress of conspiring with MNS for the continuing violence in the state.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javdekar accused MNS of instigating the violence against north Indians in Mumbai and different parts of Maharashtra. “This violence seems to be a conspiracy of the ruling Congress and MNS. The Congress has an alliance with MNS in Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Amravati and Pune. In Mira-Bhayander the two join hands to gain power, while in other places they are opposition allies. The Congress must tell us when they will break their partnership with MNS.”

Raj Thackeray had recently thanked Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for not arresting him and sending him to jail. Javdekar said Advani had clearly stated that BJP was with the constitutional spirit. The constitution provides that an Indian citizen can travel, live and work in any part of the country. There is obviously a political angle to the violence that has been incited in Maharashtra, Javdekar said.

There is a feeling among senior ministers in the government that Maharashtra government was going soft on Thackeray. Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has come out strongly on the subject on more than one occasion. Arjun Singh took his turn on Tuesday to speak on the subject: “Yes, it (Centre) should intervene. It is a law and order problem.”

“These activities are not in the interests of the country,” Singh said when asked to comment on Thackeray’s remarks and the violence that ensued.
