MUMBAI: Union minister of state for home affairs, Shri Prakash Jaiswal, said that there is a law and order problem in Maharashtra, but that he is confident the state government will act strongly to maintain peace.

“Whenever people get scared of something, [referring to the situation in Mumbai] it is considered a serious law and order problem. The state government should be serious and take strong action against those responsible for this problem,” said Jaiswal.

The Mumbai police have sent their report to the Centre naming two political leaders responsible for the violence in the city. “We are convinced with the report submitted by the police, and hope that government of Maharashtra will take strong action against leaders responsible for the violence,” said Jaiswal.

He said that the Centre believed that the basic rights of people had been violated, which is when the home department usually asks for a detailed report.

“Few politicians want to achieve political leverage by creating trouble within the society. But nobody is above law,” said Jaiswal.

But when asked whether Raj Thackrey and Abu Asim Azmi would be arrested, he said that the onus was on the state government. The same held for the murder of the Congress leader in Nagpur.

Though he was in the city to assess the law and order situation, Jaiswal also attended the Bhojpuri film awards on Saturday night.
