NEW DELHI: The government plans to set up shelters for destitute widows in each district and at various religious places.

The union ministry for women and child development has asked all the states to make an assessment based on the population of destitute widows for such shelters.

During a meeting with state women and child ministers, union minister Renuka Chowdhury also asked them to upgrade the training skill development programmes with more technical training projects.

She urged states to involve the corporate sector in the effort. “We want our women to be more enterprising to take up jobs abroad and achieve bigger targets,” Chowdhury said.

Expressing concern over growing incidents of violence and abuse against women, she called upon states for effective implementation of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act and the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. The ministry observed that some states were yet to follow up on the laws.
