GURGAON: Police have arrested five people, including a doctor, from this Haryana town on the outskirts of the national capital for allegedly luring poor men from western Uttar Pradesh and selling their kidneys to foreign and Indian clients.
Policemen from Gurgaon and Uttar Pradesh arrested the five people Thursday night and detained four foreign nationals and a NRI couple during a raid at a private hospital here.
Gurgaon police commissioner Mahender Lal said a doctor, identified as Upendra, ran the private hospital from a house in Sector 23 here.
"We found three victims at the hospital whose kidneys had been removed by doctors," Lal said.
Police officials who conducted the raids said five victims, all of them from western Uttar Pradesh, were found at the private clinic.
"The racket had been going on for six to seven years. The victims used to be brought here with the lure of giving them jobs but their kidneys used to be removed. They were being given up to Rs.100,000 for kidney removal," a police official said.
He added that further investigations were in progress and the kidney racket appeared to be a major one with inter-state and international links.
Four Greek nationals and a NRI couple from Britain were also found at the clinic during the raid and were detained by the police. They were being questioned. All of them are suspected to be buyers of the kidneys being sold at the clinic illegally.
The kidneys were being sold at prices ranging from Rs.1 to 1.5 million.
Raids were being conducted in Gurgaon, Delhi and several places in western Uttar Pradesh to bust the illegal organ trade, police officials said.
