MUMBAI: West Indies Cricket Board has asked for all the details leading to the removal of Steve Bucknor from the Perth Test between India and Australia.

Calling it as a dangerous precedent, WICB president Dr. Julian R. Hunte has shot off a letter to the International Cricket Council president Ray Mali saying, “On the surface, the ICC’s reaction seems to be extreme.”

In the strongly-worded letter, Hunte stressed, “There is no question that even the best umpires make mistakes. They are human and there are circumstances which may affect their judgment. What worries us is whether the action of the ICC in the case of Bucknor might create even more problems for the ICC and international cricket down the line.”

Hunte also demanded copies of “all communications between the ICC and Bucknor, between the ICC and any other parties, including member boards, transcripts of news releases as well as comments of match referee Mike Procter on the umpiring during the Melbourne Test and also the Sydney game.

The West Indies referred to a 2005 Test match between West Indies and Australia Down Under when the WICB had lodged a formal protest against the sub-standard umpiring.

Hunte recalled that the ICC’s had acknowledged the errors but had insisted that ‘the overall standard of umpiring has improved, particularly with the advent of the elite panel.’ “It would be interesting to know what made this situation any different,” Hunte commented.

WICB chief also pointed out that one of the umpires of that Test was Billy Bowden, Bucknor’s replacement for the third Test, and the match referee was Mike Procter, the official who has been overseeing the on-going India-Australia series.
