RANCHI: BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday called for finding the root cause of rising naxal violence in the country.

"There is some weakness somewhere and the Centre and states affected with naxal violence should find out the root cause," Mayawati said at a public meeting here.

Putting the onus on the Union Government to trace the root of increasing Maoist violence, she said, "does any person willingly go on a wrong path? I think they have chosen the wrong path after being deprived of 'rozi roti' (bread and butter) down the years".

She also recalled how protesting people had been sent to jails instead of being heard of their grievances.

The UP Chief Minister said she would write to the Centre to immediately notify the Forest Rights Act which was passed by the Parliament several months ago.

"Despite the Act having been passed by Parliament a long time ago, its non-implementation has been depriving poor tribals of their basic rights on the forests," she said.
